A mid-century californian vibe

Casa Cook Rhodes, Greece 2016

The hotel and the Greeks have a lot in common: both are laid back, accept everybody, and have a special interest in living in freely. The concept of ‘be as you are, come as a friend, eat as a friend’ is typically Mediterranian, and especially Greek.

Casa Cook, Rhodes

Casa Cook Rhodes is the pilot project of the Casa Cook Boutique hotel brand. Lambs and Lions spearheaded the conceptual development in close collaboration with interior stylist Annabell Kutucu and local architect Vana Pernari. The 97-rooms hotel is nestled within the small town of Kolymbia on Rhodes’ Eastern coast, within walking distance of the beach.

Set against a stretch of muscular rocky hills, the vibe is resolutely mid-century California louche with accents of exposed stone walls, timber decks and pergolas, while the bright rooms are strewn with rich textures and handcrafted details.

The design character is carried through to the rooms. Each rectangular block — either one-storey or two — is flanked by its own shimmering stretch of pool.

Casa Cook, Rhodes

Casa Cook Rhodes is nestled within the small town of Kolymbia on Rhodes’ Eastern coast, within walking distance of the beach. The ensemble of low white buildings creates a contemporary contrast to the rugged hillside rising 200 metres behind it. Airy, open and glass enclosed spaces are framed by lush vegetation, multiple pools, broad walkways and wooden decks and pergolas.

Just as it should be at an island retreat, Casa Cook life mostly takes place barefoot under the sky. The spatial arrangement takes its cues from this carefree mode. Core public areas form the hotel’s social hub, where an array of lounge and gathering areas include a bar, the restaurant and the main pool.

Architecturally, the seamless spaces merge indoors and out, while theinterior design also conveys a social and free-spirited character. Low, cushioned seating and oversized tables invite groups to gather, whereas the hammocks and sunbeds promise a perfect time-out alone.Textured surfaces, like wood and canvas, are matched with playful prints and patterns. There’s no shortage of visual interest: vintage pieces, handmade objects and curious finds are peppered throughout. Tropical designs add a burst of colour and decorative accessories reveal Greek craftsmanship or the spoils from a far-flung hippie trail.
