San Giorgio Hotel, Mykonos

Paraga, the southernmost beach of Mykonos, is home to San Giorgio, a hotel that dates its humble beginnings back to the '90s when an insightful local fisherman cleverly laid claim to a piece of the Paradise Beach. In 2012, the 34-room property came to the hands of Thomas Heyne and Mario Hertel, owners of the renowned Scorpios Beach Club. The duo had envisioned a hotel with a contemporary homey feel where international artists visiting the island, as well as like-minded guests, would fit right into a simple, sophisticated condition of casual comfort.

Working with interior stylist Annabell Kutucu, Michael Schickinger took their cues from Mykonos’s sun-kissed setting to conceive a carefree 1960s-style Bohemian bolthole where casual comfort and easy luxury are encoded in the hotel’s design DNA.

Avoiding Greek postcard clichés, the 34-room property carefully spotlights local craftsmanship and a colour palette drawn from the natural summery hues of the Cycladic islands. Cool sea-washed air and light flow through the white-washed cubical buildings, a modern take on traditional Mykonos architecture – whilst the open-planned minimalist interiors are warmed by a thoughtful curation of crafted fabrics, locally sourced and handmade accessories, and natural materials like wicker and raw cement.

The 6-month turnkey project included designing the staff uniform, signage, and the entire catalogue of hotel collateral.

What you see and feel at San Giorgio are equal measures of history, heritage, style and simplicity. The crisp splendor of the whitewashed buildings are just as one would expect and hope to find on this Cycladic isle.
